Fractional CMO

Marketing leadership at the level your business needs, for a fraction of the cost of hiring it.

A fractional CMO gives you an experienced marketing leader running your marketing, without the salary, the recruitment process or the risk of a permanent hire. You get the strategic thinking, the direction and the accountability of a chief marketing officer, for the days a month your business actually needs.

For most growing businesses that is the missing piece. Not more activity. Not another agency. Someone senior who owns the whole picture and is answerable for whether it works.

What is a fractional CMO?

A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader who works with your business part time, on an ongoing basis, as an embedded member of your team rather than an outside adviser. They set the strategy, decide where the budget goes, direct whoever is executing the work, and report on what it returned.

The difference between this and a full time chief marketing officer is time, not seniority. You are buying the same level of experience and judgement, scoped to what a business of your size genuinely requires. Most companies do not need a marketing director five days a week. They need one properly for two.

When do you need a fractional CMO?

The pattern is usually recognisable. Marketing is happening, but nobody senior is steering it. There may be a marketing executive, an agency, a freelancer, or all three, and no single person joining it up or holding it to a standard.

Businesses typically bring in a fractional CMO when:

  • Revenue has grown but marketing has not kept pace with it
  • There is a marketing team or agency in place, but no senior direction above them
  • Budget is being spent without a clear view of what it returns
  • A funding round, launch, rebrand or new market is coming and the stakes are high
  • A full time marketing director has been considered, and the cost or the risk does not stack up yet

Fractional CMO, marketing consultant or agency?

These get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. Choosing the wrong one is expensive.

An agency executes. They are very good at delivery, and they will do what the brief says. What they will not do is tell you the brief is wrong, or take responsibility for whether the strategy behind it was sound.

A marketing consultant advises. They will assess your marketing, tell you what they see and hand you a plan. Implementation is then your problem, and plans that nobody owns tend not to survive contact with a busy month.

A fractional CMO owns it. Strategy, direction, budget decisions, oversight of whoever delivers the work, and accountability for the outcome. If you already know exactly what you need doing, an agency is fine. If you need someone to work out what should be done and then make sure it happens, that is a fractional CMO.

And if you have neither a team nor an agency, that is not a problem either. We can do the work as well as decide it. For smaller businesses with a manageable workload, SCM will either set the strategy and coach you to run it yourself, or take the marketing on and run it for you.

If you want senior input but not embedded leadership, our retained consultancy is the lighter touch version of the same expertise.

How SCM works as your fractional CMO

Every engagement starts with an honest assessment of where your marketing actually is, not where it is supposed to be. That means looking at the strategy, the channels, the spend, the tools and the people, and being straight with you about what is working and what is not.

From there the work is ongoing rather than a report. Setting the direction, agreeing what success looks like in numbers, briefing and holding to account whoever is delivering, and reviewing performance on a fixed rhythm so nothing drifts for a quarter before anyone notices.

Samantha has 25 years in marketing and has run her own consultancy since 2013, covering everything from traditional media through to AI and the way large language models are changing how customers find businesses. You are not getting an account manager. You are working directly with the person doing the thinking.

SCM works with businesses across Preston, Lancashire, Manchester and the wider North West in person, and with clients throughout the UK and internationally remotely.

  • Leadership of your existing team, freelancers or agencies
  • Agreed reporting rhythm against numbers set at the outset
  • Direct access to Samantha, with no account management layer
  • Scope and days agreed up front and reviewed as the business changes

What does a fractional CMO cost?

A fractional CMO is priced on the time your business needs, usually as a fixed monthly retainer covering an agreed number of days. The comparison worth making is not against an agency fee, it is against the true cost of a full time hire once salary, employer national insurance, pension, recruitment fees and the risk of getting it wrong are all counted.

For most growing businesses the fractional model delivers the same seniority for a fraction of that figure, and it flexes as the business changes rather than locking you into a permanent commitment. Scope is agreed openly before anything starts, so there are no surprises. You can see our day rates and retainer pricing in full.

Common questions

How many days a month does a fractional CMO work?

It depends entirely on what you need. Some businesses need a couple of days a month to set direction and keep things honest. Others need considerably more during a launch or a period of fast growth. We agree it at the outset and revisit it as things change, rather than selling you a fixed package that does not fit.

Will you work with our existing team and agencies?

Yes, and that is usually the point. A fractional CMO sits above your existing resource, not in place of it. Your team and suppliers keep delivering, with clearer direction and someone senior holding the standard.

Is a fractional CMO the same as an outsourced marketing director?

In practice, yes. Outsourced marketing director, part time marketing director and fractional CMO all describe the same arrangement: senior marketing leadership bought by the day rather than by the salary. The title matters less than whether the person is genuinely accountable for results.

How long does an engagement usually last?

Long enough to be useful. Marketing leadership is not a one month exercise, and most engagements run for a sustained period because strategy takes time to show in the numbers. That said, we agree terms openly and the arrangement should flex with your business, not trap it.

What size of business is this suitable for?

Typically established SMEs with revenue to protect and grow, where marketing has become too important to leave unsupervised but not yet large enough to warrant a full time director. If a fractional CMO is not the right fit for where you are, we will say so.
