Retained Marketing Consultant

A senior marketing consultant on your team every month. Without the full-time hire.

Some businesses don’t need a one-off project. They need someone senior in their corner on an ongoing basis, available when a campaign needs scrutiny, when a rebrand is on the horizon, when a crisis needs managing, or when a high-stakes decision needs the right pair of eyes.

A retained marketing consultant, scoped to you

SCM’s retained consultancy puts exactly that in place: a fixed monthly engagement that gives you access to senior marketing expertise, strategic oversight and hands-on support, scoped to what your business actually needs.

No account managers in the middle. No generic advice. Just direct access to someone who knows your business and has the experience to guide it, the marketing director-level input growing businesses need, without the six-figure salary.

Senior support, exactly when it matters

Marketing decisions rarely arrive on a schedule. A retained arrangement means the senior judgement is already there when you need it, reviewing a campaign before you commit budget, steering a rebrand, or handling the unexpected, rather than scrambling to find help after the fact.

Who this is for

  • Growing businesses that need strategic marketing input but aren’t ready to hire a senior full-time marketing lead
  • Companies that have a marketing team but lack senior oversight
  • Founders who want an expert available for key decisions without a full-time commitment
  • Smaller businesses with nobody in place, who want the marketing handled rather than just advised on

What’s included

  • Monthly strategic sessions (frequency agreed at outset)
  • Campaign review and performance oversight
  • On-call support for urgent decisions, rebrands, or crisis moments
  • Quarterly strategy reviews
  • Priority access for new project work

What does a retained marketing consultant actually do?

A marketing consultant on retainer does three things for most businesses. They set the direction, so activity follows a plan rather than a habit. They hold the standard, reviewing what is being produced and whether it is worth the money. And they are available for the decisions that do not wait, a campaign about to launch, a rebrand being considered, a supplier who needs challenging.

What separates a retained marketing consultant from an agency is accountability for the thinking rather than the output. An agency is measured on what it delivers. A consultant is measured on whether the business moved. That is a different kind of pressure and it produces different advice, including the advice to stop doing something you are currently paying for.

If you already have a team or an agency, the work sits above them. If you have nobody, we will either set the plan and coach you through running it, or take the marketing on and run it. Both are common, and neither requires you to build a department first.

What does a marketing retainer include?

Scope is agreed before anything starts, but a typical marketing retainer covers an agreed number of days each month, a standing strategy session, review of campaigns and spend before commitments are made, and access in between for the decisions that arrive without warning. Quarterly, we step back and look at whether the plan is still the right one.

What it does not include is an account manager relaying messages, or a report that exists to justify the invoice. You deal with the person doing the thinking, which is the entire point of hiring a consultant rather than a firm.

What does a marketing consultant retainer cost?

Retainers start at £1,500 plus VAT a month and are priced on the days your business actually needs, not on a package someone invented. Day rates and the full pricing structure are published on our marketing consultant cost page, because you should not have to sit through a call to find out what something costs.

The comparison worth making is not against an agency fee. It is against a full time marketing director once salary, employer national insurance, pension and recruitment fees are counted, and against the cost of the decisions that get made badly when nobody senior is looking.

Retainer, project, or fractional CMO?

A project suits a defined piece of work with an end point: an audit, a plan, a launch. A retainer suits a business that needs senior judgement available continuously but does not need it every week. A fractional CMO goes further again, taking ownership of the marketing function and being accountable for its results.

Most businesses we work with start with a project or a light retainer and adjust from there. You do not need to pick correctly on day one, and the arrangement should change as the business does rather than staying fixed because it is written down somewhere.

Common questions

How is a retainer different from a project?

A project has a fixed scope and end point. A retainer is an ongoing relationship, senior marketing expertise on tap, month to month, so support is already in place whenever a decision or opportunity arises.

How much of your time do we get?

That’s agreed at the outset and scoped to your needs, from a light-touch monthly session to closer ongoing involvement. It flexes as your business does.

Is there a minimum commitment?

We keep retainers deliberately straightforward and will talk you through terms before anything starts. The aim is a genuinely useful relationship, not a lock-in.

Do I need a marketing consultant or a marketing agency?

If your problem is capacity, an agency. If your problem is that you cannot tell whether any of it is working, a consultant. Plenty of businesses keep their agency and bring a consultant in above it, which is usually the cheapest way to fix a relationship that is producing activity rather than results.

Can you work alongside our existing team or agency?

Yes, and it is the most common arrangement. Your people keep delivering, with clearer direction and someone senior holding the standard. We are not there to replace anybody, and we will say so plainly if the team you have is the right one.

We have no marketing team at all. Is a retainer still worth it?

Often more so. With nobody in place, the risk is not poor oversight, it is drift: months passing with nothing decided. A retainer gives you a fixed point each month where decisions get made, and we can take the work on as well as plan it if that suits you better.
